Young Entrepreneurs of the week go to….

Coco And Breezy!

Coco & Breezy is a fashion accessory company based in NY. The company was founded in 2009 by Corianna (“Coco”) and Brianna (“Breezy”) Dotson, both African American and Puerto Rican identical sisters. They’re known for their phenomenal sunglasses which have been worn by such celebrities as Kelly Osburne, Nicki Minaj, Amber Rose and Serena Williams. They have spoken at many schools and even posed for fashion illustrator sketch nights. Recently, they had their first pop-up shop in Los Angeles, California and there were rumors that Adidas will be enlisting the design help of the sisters in one of their upcoming projects. Congrats Coco and Breezy! We hope to create more young and motivated individuals like you!

News Alert!

For those of you who have not heard yet, according to, nearly 300 teen aged girls were abducted from their school in Nigeria on April 15. Police have said that some were able to escape but 276 remain kidnapped. Gunmen abducted the girls from their dormitories at the Government Girls Secondary school in Chibok. One girl told the New Yorker that militants dressed in Nigerian military uniforms came into their dorms and told the girls they were being taken to a safe space. They were placed in trucks and on motorcycles and driven away as the militants shouted “Allahu akbar,” which means God is great. Some of the girls have been taken across Nigeria’s borders, to Chad and Cameroon, to be sold into marriage, according to the Associated Press.

As of now, there is a lot of pressure on the Nigerian president as protesters take over the streets in Nigeria and people campaign about it all over the world. The social media campaign has gained momentum with celebrities, such as singer Mary J. Blige, offering their support. Education advocate and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who made a miraculous recovery after being shot in the head by the Taliban, posed in a picture with the #BringBackOurGirls poster and many more are voicing their concern.

I really do hope and pray these girls remain unharmed and are returned to their families as quickly as possible. Bring Our Girls Back!

What the…. ?

First Kanye West in the kilt, then Wiz Khalifa in leggings, now this….

Kid Cudi wore this red crop top to Coachella 2014 and lots of people seemed to really like it. I must give it to Cudi. He’s bold for this one. Besides the fact that it doesn’t surprise me how lots of male celebrities are taking more fashion risks, I kind of adore how some men who are confident with their sexuality can be so fashionably diverse.

What are your thoughts?

New Artist Alert!

Check out 18-year-old singer and rapper, Doja Cat straight from Los Angeles, California! Her new single “So High” is as freakishly whimsical and cool as Grace Jones in the 70s. Her blue skin, soulful voice and 70s hippie look makes it hard not remember her. To me, she’s organically portrayed as “ART”. Many would probably say she is reminds them of a mixture of M.I.A., Jhene Aiko and Amy Winehouse. But overall she is just intoxicating. Watch her new music video by clicking the link below!!

Fact Attack!!

Good for Kohl’s, Bad for Juicy

Juicy Couture, known for its exclusive velour and terry cloth loungewear, is now taking a dive in to the common world. Fifth and Pacific, formerly known as Liz Claiborne, had once acquired Juicy Couture but then sold them to ABG (Authentic Brands Group) who then negotiated a deal to sell Juicy to Kohl’s! In simpler words, Juicy Couture is no longer a stand alone store but will now be sold at their sole seller, Kohl’s. (Read the full article in the link below)

Janelle Monae!!

I’m so used to seeing Janelle decked in tailored tuxedos and Oxford’s. Although her signature look is always astonishing, I must admit, it is refreshing to see her in a different ensemble. It’s still her but its different. Go Janelle!

My life… My journey…

Screen shot 2014-03-11 at 6.07.46 PM

As I have stated before, I am a senior at FIT. I’ll be graduating in May with an AS in Fashion Merchandising and a BS in International Trade, I also have a great skill for sewing, which is great. But like many… I don’t quite know where I’m going next. In a strange way, this kind of excites me because I love when the future surprises me… I tried to plan my future, but that never turns out well. For example, initially I wanted to get an internship at a company here in NY that was also located in Shanghai, China. (Givenchy etc). I would have done my best so I had it in my mind I would get accepted in to the company for a paid position. I then wanted to transfer from that job and move to China to live and work for the same company since I have already lived out there before… But, it didn’t go that way… not even a bit. And I’m not upset. Will is will…

From then on, all I’ve had in mind is to design and travel… That’s it. While working and saving, I want to visit many other countries and just breathe… I’d love to do this because I believe in order to find yourself, you have to first lose yourself… Living in America alone can force people to be so money hungry, they’ll sacrifice doing what they really love for bucks. And to add we’re all surrounded by so much competition that it has become a lifestyle. But who am I to say, it is just American culture… That’s why I’d love to move out of America and work elsewhere… Where my work is well needed and highly appreciated even if it’s under a rock in Madagascar. I’d just like to do what I love (sew and design) and provide great deeds to a community who needs it…

One vision that I always had was to get married, move to any undeveloped country and raise a village. In this village, I would teach, cook and design for everyone… … and it will be most whimsical place to be… everyone would want to visit…

But I can dream for days…

I Got 99 Problems and Shopping is One….

Screen shot 2014-03-04 at 1.39.04 PM

Now days, many young fashionistas may find it difficult to shop in stores. This includes men and women from the ages of 18-28… Ones that have an eye for exclusive apparel… Or ones that don’t have loads of money to spend. How do I know this? I ask friends and school mates who may possibly have these troubles, and sadly I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. As a design student, I personally don’t shop as much, I just know how to do “the thing” …put random items together to make an outfit look appealing which is how many people like myself have been surviving this fashion drought. But when it is time for me to go out and shop, the types of clothes I need are almost impossible to find. Things as simple as long, black, skinny, high waist jeans or long, white, wide leg, high waist pants seem hard to find. Visualizing them might seem complex, but they are simple items that are a hassle to find.

Then when looking for something as aristocratic as a white leather moto jacket, it’s like asking for too much. I have no luck anywhere. The first place people may say to look for most of these items are H&M, Macy’s, Zara or Forever 21. Here are the problems, H&M is known for selling super trendy items that become overwhelming when you see everyone in the city with them on. Macy’s appeals to a more brand loyal or conservative crowd also known as “boring”. Zara is cool but can sometimes be pricey and the style is set to a more modern or conventional consumer. The quality at Forever 21 isn’t promising so some people don’t even waste time going there. And then you have places like Top Shop and American Apparel who do sell risque, unique and body-conscious pieces, but are way overpriced. There are so many talented designers coming out with things that are so “unthinkable”, they forget about things that can still be just as elite if they think “simple”.

So far these have been my alternatives, shopping online;,, and

Party and Bullshit… While Rocking gold chains, door knockers and drinking 40s! The 90s style has definitely come back with full force. Vibrant colors and over-sized clothing have been extremely successful on the market. While the older dress more conventional..the younger revert back to the house party days for inspiration! Rita Ora, Rihanna, A$ap Rocky, Solange, Odd Future and many more have definitely helped bring the 90s back to life. And it looks better now than ever before!

Nothing is more fun than collaborating the fashion of different cultures. From rocking our Urban Harlem Renaissance style to wearing Ugandan prints, there is no wrong way to go. Who would have ever thought to wear high tops and turbans? Well.. it looks good and A. Bernadette prides itself on incorporating all cultural aspects to start ingenious trends.
